The Spiders العناكــــــب
It is a story that combines imagination, science and adventure . It encourages the spirit of scientific research and how to face sudden problems using scientific methods accurately .
قصة " العناكب " تربط بين الخيال و العلم و المغامرة و تشجيع روح البحث العلمي إلي جانب كيف تواجه أي مشكلات باستخدام طرق علمية دقيقة .
1 ) What do you know about spiders ?
Spiders belong to the arachnid family which includes scorpions . There are different species of spider . Every year , scientists discover new species that are added to them . A spider spins a web that it uses to catch insects . That is why scientists believe spiders are useful to us as they help us to get rid of insects . Male spiders are often much smaller than females . A female spider lays about 2000 eggs and encloses them in sacs of white silk . The females of the spider develop quickly and within a few weeks, there can be millions of them . Most of spiders are not deadly . They spiders in modern Egypt are not dangerous . However , in ancient Egypt there were deadly spiders . Our story is about a certain species of spider which lived in ancient Egypt and is still living in Egyptian tombs . They are deadly and are black with two thick yellow lines in colour on its back .
2 ) What do you know about the internet ?
The internet is a huge “ network “ of computers connected to smaller networks all over the world . Such networks are connected through public and private telephones with cables made of fibre glass or copper wire so that they can carry a large body of information at great speeds . Some networks are also connected through radio . Networks all through the world are connected with under- sea cables or satellites .
3 ) What are the uses of the Internet ?
As soon as you are connected with the internet , you can do a lot of different jobs . You can play games , engage in an interesting chat , exchange messages . listen to music , do the shopping and academic work . You can ask for a search for a topic you are doing research on ; the net will provide you with all the books and periodicals on it . Moreover , they can provide abstracts of all that has been written so far . People often use the internet for sending e-mail or for participating in debates and dialogues with people of your interest all over the world .
Technology in the story
1-The Robbers & Technology
The robbers used a machine for quickly detecting rooms before the are reached . The machine was connected to a computer by a wire . Some switches were turned and it began to work . The machine transmuted radio waves through the wall . When the waves hit something . on the other side . they came back . The computer changed the radio waves into a picture .
2-The Helicopter pilot & Technology
On board the helicopter there were a telecom engineer and technician . They were on their way to a transmitter in the desert which had a technical problem . Of course , they were equipped with the latest of technology . The pilot sent the news of the robbers by radio .
3-Ayman & Technology
Ayman used the internet for his university studies and for making friends in other countries Through the internet , he could get in touch with Dr. Fakhry who , in turn , got back to him on different occasions . He gathered a lot of knowledge about the spider from different sources . In hospital , Ayman was kept alive the help of a ventilator which is high technology .
4-Scientists & Technology
Professor Jones used the most up – to – date technology in his researches and to get hold of
the spiders . Susan Bennett used a CD to identify the species of the female spider on the database
CHAPACTERS الشخصيات
1 – AYMAN HASSAN
Brief notes on his history :-
He was the eldest son of the Hassan familyThe family lived in a house next to the police
station He was a university student .He had his own computer .His favourite hobby was the
internet .He used the internet for his university studies .He also used it for making friends in
other countries . Ayman saw the spider : He saw the spider for the first time at a corner of
his walled garden . He was surprised at its speed and size . It was black with two yellow
lines on its back . Ayman’s scientific sense : Ayman phoned a friend who was a student of
zoology to identify the spider He used the world wide web to search for “ black and yellow “
spider . He found many species of spider but they were not his spider . He contacted Dr
Shereen Fakhry , the translator of a very old text about a town where many people were
killed by blank and yellow spiders .His sense of duty and fondness of adventure :
He informed the police about the spider he had seen in the garden .He took part in the search
for the spiders . His bravery : Although he knew that the spiders were deadly , he joined the
officers who went to explore the site .When the spiders attacked one of the officers , he ran
forward to help him . As he was doing that , female spider landed on Ayman’s face . His suit
was torn . Spiders went inside his suit and bit him . He was also brave when he knocked the
spider that was on the wall into the aluminum box of the camera . His intelligence :
When he saw the 7 – legged female on the wall, he used the camera’s flashlight to blind it and catch it
2 – Dr. SHEREEN FAKHRY
She worked at the Department of Egyptology at Oxford University . She had translated a very old Egyptian text about a town in ancient Egypt where many people were killed by black and yellow spiders . She was sympathetic and co-operative . She helped Ayman to get information about the black and yellow spiders . Her talk with professor Malcolm Jones led to the professors .Trip to Egypt which was very helpful . She informed Ayman of a plant that grew in Sinai and was a cure for the bites of spiders .
3 – Professor Malcolm Jones
He was the head of zoology Department at Oxford University .He was a very famous archeologist He found three or four unknown species of spider every year on his trips to south Africa and South America . He was interested in the picture of the black and yellow spider that Dr. Shereen showed him . He was interested in the spider that Ayman saw .He flew to Cairo because he thought the spider might be an unknown species . Professor Jones was very helpful and co-operative . He accompanied the police officers who went to the archaeological site .
He entered the underground tomb with them . He used his equipment and by using poisonous smoke , he killed many spiders .He picked the underground tomb with them .He used his equipment and using poisonous smoke, he killed many spiders .He picked up three of the spiders to send their venom sacs to an antivenom lab . His ideas about spiders were right and true .He was grateful and generous . He gave Ayman a good camera as a present because Ayman gave him the chance to discover a new species of spider .
4 – WAFAA SULTAN
She was a researcher in the Department of Botanic Science at Cairo University .
She had studied a plant called “ Echinacea Negra “ . A medicine for the deadly black and
yellow spiders was made from the roots of that plant . She left by helicopter for Sinai to get the
plants . She was brave and persistent . She and the officers who were with her faced great
hard ships on their return journey . She had a strong sense of duty . She always had in mind that she
had a young man’s life in her hands .
5 – COLONEL MHKAH
He was the police chief at Hamdayya police station . He had learnt to judge the usefulness of other men quickly . As soon as he knew about the spiders that killed the archaeologists, he took the necessary measures. He asked professor Jones to find a spider and identify it in order to get the proper antivenin. He arranged a campaign to go the site . He provided his men with protective clothing to keep the spiders out .When he was informed of the Echinacea plants, he phoned Cairo University to be in touch with Wafaa Sultan , the botanist who had studied that plant .
He made arrangements to search the area for the female spider that Ayman had seen . His sense of duty was strong . He supervised everything . He asked after Ayman who was in hospital for being by the spiders .He followed the news of Wafaa Sultan till she returned from Sinai with the plants that saved Ayman
6 – THE FEMALE SPIDR
If characters are evaluated according to the part they play in the story . they the Female spider can truly be considered the main female character . It is the prime mover of all the events of the story . Since it first appeared , it had set the whole world in motion . Everbody had to be prepared and ready to confront . When all the people with all their technology waged war against it , it stood firm and steadfastly fought back . It had to face the police , Ayman and his family , professor Jones and many others . However, it bravely stood and fought to the end . We can’t deny that it tried its best to defend its young but technology was by far stronger . Actually it had its own admirers such as professor Jones who was very sympathetic . Again it was as all spiders of noble origin because it didn’t bite until it was disturbed . If nobody had disturbed it , it would have never tried to hurt anybody . It was so brave that when the tank fell on one of its legs, it used its fangs t cut its entrapped leg off and free itself . It is like a soldier who would rather kill himself than fall in the hands of the enemy . It never surrendered but fought to the end .

That spider was not like the Indonesian type with black and yellow . spots nor was it like garden spiders of the USA with its seven yellow spots . It was an unidentified species of spider similar to the Ancient Egyptian spiders found near Bawiti .
3 – Its Reproduction
The female spider laid 2000 eggs . It carefully enclosed them in four sacs of white silk . These eggs could develop quickly ; four weeks was the maximum . Therefore . within few weeks there would be millions of them .
4 – Where the Spiders lived
Generally speaking . spiders like to live secret places where it is dark and quiet . They choose places where nobody comes to disturb them and where there is plenty of food . The spiders in the story lived in underground tombs away from the heat of the desert . There were safe where nobody could find them .
