Introduction
MEA is inviting applications from young, motivated, hard working, determined and creative Lebanese Nationals to be trained under the MEA Cadet Pilot Training Program, to become qualified First Officers (Co-Pilots). They will be required eventually to work as part of the Flight Crew (Pilots) on modern aircrafts of MEA’s new state of the art fleet.
The airline pilot’s profession requires the safety awareness and the demonstration of high standards of mental and physical skills e.g. problem solving , coping with pressure and change in addition to certain personality traits such as discipline, high moral values and integrity (Ethics). Airline pilots have to be good team -players and should be able to adapt to working within a multi-national environment and international training.
Interested Candidates will undergo a selection process which will determine their suitability for the role of First Officers. This selection process is divided into several stages, which necessitates passing them successfully.
Successful candidates will join the MEA Cadet Pilot Training Program designed to train them to obtain the European JAA (Joint Aviation Authorities) Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), Commercial Pilot License (CPL), and Instrument Rating (IR), Multi Crew Cooperation Course (MCC) and Jet Orientation Course (JOC).
This training is conducted at a contracted renowned flying school, usually Flight Training Europe www.ftejerez.com . All testing will be conducted under the United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority regulations.
The duration of the initial (ab-initio) training, comprised of ground school, simulator, actual airplane flying and JOC is estimated at 66 weeks. The cost of this program includes full board accommodation.
Following the successful completion of the initial (ab-initio) training, the cadet will also undergo a Type Rating training (estimated at 6 weeks).

The following pages contain the information required to take you through the selection process. MEA reserves the right to change the information below if and when deemed necessary.
I. Qualifications
1. General Requirements

2. Age
Born between 01/01/1988 and 31/12/1994 (both dates inclusive) .
Born between 01/01/1983 and 31/12/1994 (both dates inclusive) if holding CPL/IR .
3. Education
A. Lebanese Baccalaureate or official equivalence .
B. Successfully completed during the year 2013, (1) one year of university or Sophomore (about 33 credits; Freshman is not acceptable) if not holding CPL/IR.
C. Candidates who do not comply with “B” above, and are expected to complete their first year university during the year 2013 may apply and shall be considered, but will not be accepted for training until they complete (1) one year of university.
4. Physical Requirements
A. Acceptable physical appearance.
B. Height: minimum 170 cm (males) and 168 cm (females).
C. Weight: appropriate to height.
D. Adequate Body Mass Index (BMI).

e) All information must be correct. Any false declaration, whenever discovered, will result in annulment of your application and/or selection process.
f) If your application meets the requirements it will be acknowledged; you will be emailed with questions which should be answered as soon as possible and within a deadline specified in the email. 2. After submitting your online application and receiving a webmail questionnaire, you are supposed to make a non-refundable payment of the examination fees as below:
A. Of US$ 300.00 Three hundred US dollars to be paid at any Bank Audi branch by cash deposit in "MEA Cadet Pilot Training Program" account 407081-461-002-004-341, IBAN no.# LB97-0056-0004-0708-1461-0020-0434, Plaza Bab Idriss branch (please keep your receipt and make sure your ID number and name are mentioned on the receipt) .
B. Before 10 December 2012 .
3. Send the following:
1. A Copy of the Lebanese Baccalaureate or equivalence .
2. A New extract of the personal civil record status (with issuance date less than three months).
3. A New Judicial record (with issuance date less than one month).
4. Two passport - size photos.
5. A copy of your fee payment receipt (ID number and name mentioned) .
These documents are to be received by MEA before 14 December 2012. Please allow enough time for mail delivery.
4. Send complete documentation as requested by express courier or by registered mail to MEA address, after being notified that you have passed the written examination.
A. It is your responsibility to make sure that all required documents are included in your file in original or certified copies .
B. Your name must be printed on the cover in the following format: FAMILY, First, father (no ‘el’ or ‘al’ for family name) for example: for family name El-Hajj write HAJJ (el) .
C. The latest date for this file to be received in MEA is 01 March 2013. Any file received after this date will NOT be considered.
II. Selection Process
- Selection process shall be completed in stages as shown below. Moving to the next stage is conditional on passing the previous one.

- All tests, examinations, interview, medical (etc..) results are the property of MEA, and will not be revealed to applicants or any other person, or organizations.

1. Examinations (Day1)
These examinations are designed to measure your academic ability in mathematics and physics and are based on the Lebanese Baccalaureate Scientific program. Except for the English essay, all exams are in objective form, i.e. “multiple choice". The examinations will include:
A. Achievement tests in Mathematics and Physics:
Math test (sample questions) is made up of 30 multiple-choice items and Physics test (sample questions) is made up of 35 multiple-choice items each with four alternatives, one of which is the correct answer.
The duration of each tests is 60 minutes. Scientific calculators (NOT graphic calculators) are allowed. Programmable calculators are NOT ALLOWED and shall be removed from the applicant before the exam. Substitute calculators shall not be provided.
B. An English proficiency test: Consists of 120 questions and takes about two hours to complete. It will have two major parts:

(2) A subjective essay part that tests your ability to communicate effectively in writing. It is a half an hour test.
C. A general Cognitive ability test:
It measures your ability to learn, adapt, solve problems and understand instructions. It is a 12 minutes test consisting of 50 questions. (sample questions)
D. Specialized aptitude tests in Mechanical:
This assessment evaluates the ability to understand basic mechanical principles of machinery, tools and motion. This ability is important for any sort of work involving the design, operation or repair of equipment and is also very important in the field of engineering. It is a 20 minutes test consisting of 45 problems. (description) .
E. Spatial relations:
This assessment evaluates the ability to visualize a three-dimensional object from a two-dimensional pattern and how this object would look if rotated in space. This ability is important in fields or occupations requiring visualization. This ability is needed for any form of work in which it is important to be able to visualize objects and to understand how they relate to each other. It is a 15 minutes test consisting of 35 problems. (description).
On the day of the written examination, you are required to bring with you the following documents:
• Recent extract personal civil record status (with issuance date less than 3 months) إخراج قيد جديد

• Bank Audi’s payment receipt (ID number and name mentioned).
All required material will be distributed before the test (pens, pencils, answer sheets, draft sheets, etc...).
* Location: Planned at American University of Beirut, West Hall Common Room.
* Date: On 20 December 2012.
* Time: You are required to be present for the examination as of 8:30 a.m.
The Following is the proposed examination schedule:
09:00-11:30 Physics and Math achievement Tests.
11:30-12:00 Break
12:00-13:30 General Ability test, Mechanical, Spatial aptitude.
13:30-14:00 Break
14:00-17:00 English; including 30 minutes essay
2. Initial medical checkup
Once you have been notified that you have passed the academic examination, you will be given an appointment with MEA Chief Medical Officer for preliminary medical examination.

3. Examination (Day2)
F. Personality Inventory:
It measures normal personality used to predict job performance, strengths and weaknesses. It pinpoints characteristics relevant for success in most work environments. It is made up of about 200 true false items and requires 15-20 minutes completion time.
G. Oral Interview:
About half an hour oral interview. It will include evaluating your oral proficiency and obtaining a measure of your communicative language. This will be done using structured interviews that will assess your pronunciation, structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and interactions in a series of work-related interviews, interactions and discussions.
On the day of the written examination, you are required to bring with you the following documents:

4. Flight Training School : Job Suitability and Assessment
The following tests are designed to assess your suitability to perform pilot duties against the flight training school criteria . They include mental, sensory, interactive and emotional capabilities. They will evaluate your academic potential to cope with ground school as well as your physical ability to fly aircraft.

There will be (morning and afternoon) a four-hour testing sessions (08:00-12:30 & 13:00-17:30), preceded by thirty minutes briefings, planned to test your Academic and Flying ability, in addition to, your Personality as follows:
A- Educational potential
1. One hour multiple choice Math & Physics written test (no penalty for wrong answers).
2. One hour reasoning written test.
A. Numerical reasoning
B. Numeracy
C. Verbal reasoning
B-Flying ability (Pilot aptitude)
One-hour computer delivered tests assessing your coping with 2D & 3D environment, special awareness and information processing ability. Time element is involved.
C- Personality evaluation
One hour interview designed to find more about your personality irrelevant of your academic and flying potentials.
· Please make sure you know the date, time and location of your test which will be provided to you.
· You have to report 30 minutes before the tests beginning.
· All details and explanations will be given in the briefing sessions before the tests.
· Multiple choice questions without penalty for wrong answers.
· Time element is involved .
· You will be allowed to use calculators, pens and papers .
· No sample questions available, please don’t ask for any.
5. Interviews:

6. Medical examination at MEA specified medical center (estimated cost is US$1000)

· You have to report on the specified date at 08:00 a.m., and you should be fasting (no eating or drinking after 10 p.m. of the previous night).
· You should have your Lebanese ID card with you on the day of the examination.
· You have to clearly fill in, and sign the medical form given to you at the medical institution.
· You have to provide detailed reports about surgeries or medical operations you previously did , and you should present them to the institution’s medical representative.
· Results should be within MEA’s acceptable limits and standards. Results outside acceptable limits are disqualifying.
· All medical results are confidential and are the property of MEA.
This is a complete medical profile examination which includes, but is not limited to:
A. Complete blood test: CBC, FBS, HbA1C, Lipid profile, HIV, HbsAg
B. Urinalysis
C. Echocardiography: EEG (electro-encephalogram); ECG stress and cardiac U/S; Stress/Echo/Doppler
D. Chest X ray
E. Eye examination (phorias)
F. Sight:
· Near vision: correction not acceptable .
· Good and stable distant vision: minor correction up to 1 degree with 100% correction is acceptable.
· Astigmatism and/or daltonism (color blindness) are not acceptable .
· LASIK and/or vision correction eye surgeries are not acceptable and are disqualifying.
G. Audiogram.
H. Speech deficiency (stuttering).
I. Family history of metabolic nutritional and endocrine disorders.
J. Heart deficiencies and diseases are disqualifying.
K. Congenital diseases must be declared and will be considered on case by case basis.
IV. CONTRACTUAL & FINANCIAL
1. Contract
A. Term of the Contract: Once selected to join MEA’s Cadet Pilot Training Program, you will be required to sign a Contract with MEA for Ten Contractual Years, starting from the date of employment, and valid thereafter.
B. Starting salary as “First Officer” is approximately US$ 2,600.00
2. Cost of training
Successful applicants shall bear the costs of their initial (ab-initio) training estimated at US$ 125,000.
However, in case of financial difficulty, MEA may assist in arranging a credit facility based on a written request from the Cadet pilot in that respect., subject to the evaluation and results of a Committee that will carry out a Social Investigation concerning the Cadet’s financial situation.
The amount of loan shall be repayable by the Cadet Pilot effective from the first month of his/her employment in the Company, with an annual interest set according to MEA’s cost of fund currently at 4.5% and a rate of deduction of 25% from his/her monthly salary.
The granting of the above mentioned credit requires the provision of US$ 100,000 as a bank guarantee acceptable to MEA, and /or a real estate mortgage in the value of not less than US$ 150,000.00 acceptable to MEA for the period of the loan.
Cadet pilots willing to pay fully their Training Phase costs, without any financial assistance from MEA, shall be given the priority to start their training.
A. Ab-Initio training: US$ 125,000.00 (estimated)
1. If a loan is not required, the cadet pilot must settle the following payments as specified hereunder:
a. US$ 40,000 on the date of Contract’s signature.
b. US$ 40,000 after 3 months starting from the date of the Training Phase.
c. US$ 45,000 after 6 months starting from the date of the Training Phase.
2. If a loan is required, the cadet pilot must pay the following amounts and provide the required guarantees:
a. Initial payment: US$ 25,000
b. Amount to be lent: US$ 100,000 (estimated) against securing a real estate mortgage in the amount of US$ 150,000, and/ or a bank guarantee acceptable to MEA in the amount of US$ 100,000.
c. Balance shall be collected via installments after the end of the Training Phase, and the date of release of the Cadet as a First Officer (مساعد قائد طائرة ).
B. Type rating: US$ 75,000.00 (estimated)
· For the purpose of the type rating, the Cadet pilot is required to provide a “Certified Personal Guarantee in Solidarity with a sponsor acceptable to MEA” (كفالة شخصية بالتضامن مصادق عليها من كاتب عدل)
· Type rating costs shall be debited to the personal account of the Cadet with the legal interest.
· This debt shall be waived when all legal, contractual and financial obligations are fully respected by the cadet pilot.
3. Insurance
The cadet pilot is required to undertake a Life and Personal Accident temporary Insurance covering but not limited to flying risks as a cadet pilot in the amount of US$ 125,000 naming MEA as the sole beneficiary.
MEA shall contract out an insurance policy on behalf of the Cadet and at his/her own expense, which shall be debited to the personal account of the Cadet .
4. Formalities and Travel Arrangements
They will be handled by MEA, knowing that all estimated expenses are accounted for within the total cost of the Training Phase.
